 Testimonials

"In December 2023, I was engaged as a featured soloist with Orchestra Kentucky for a performance of Christmas/holiday music. The day of the concert, the conductor fell ill and Joshua was called upon to fill in for the conductor. With just a few hours notice, Joshua studied the scores and led the orchestra in the final rehearsal and the evening performance. The orchestra followed Joshua's direction as he negotiated 20 selections of various tempi and styles, and as he followed the soloists in their singing. Joshua rose to the occasion and the concert went off without a problem. He is to be commended for stepping in at the last minute to make the concert a success."

"It has been my great privilege and pleasure to call Dr. Joshua Shepherd my colleague and friend for the past three and a half years. Immediately recognizing his potential upon our meeting at the 2022 International Conductors Guild conference, I invited him to join the Butler Philharmonic Orchestra as cover conductor for our Holiday Pops concert. This has led to numerous returns. On each occasion, Maestro Shepherd has proven himself to be an invaluable resource. A true “musician’s conductor,” he has found a second home with the BPO. Joshua possesses a keen ear and clear technique and he is proficient in the classics as well as all pops repertoire. I encourage all orchestras which seek a guest conductor or MD candidate to move Maestro Shepherd to the top of your list. He is the real deal!"

"In my experience playing violin under Joshua Shepherd’s baton with The People's Orchestra of Nashville, his preparation, clarity, and warmth were always evident. From before the first downbeat, Joshua consistently established an atmosphere of confidence and unity, effortlessly guiding musicians through challenging programs ranging from Beethoven masterworks to intricate film scores. Joshua's thoughtful musical leadership, paired with his humor and genuine enthusiasm, made rehearsals enjoyable and concerts truly memorable. His ability to quickly adapt and engage both orchestra and audience is remarkable. I can recommend him wholeheartedly."
